Griggs Receives J. William Byrd Award for Staff Excellence 

MOUNT OLIVE –George Griggs of Goldsboro recently received the J. William Byrd Award for Staff Excellence at the University of Mount Olive. The award, presented during the University’s Annual employee appreciation luncheon, was given in honor of Dr. J. William Byrd, president emeritus of the University. The award recognized Griggs for his quality of work and demonstration of the University’s covenant. Along with the award, Griggs also received a cash value of $3,000 for his work excellence.

Griggs has worked with the University since January of 2012 as an infrastructure administrator in the Technology Services and Support Department.  

A coworker commented, “George acts responsibly and always displays gratitude. He does everything with a smile on his face, and he is always caring and respectful.  UMO is very fortunate to have such a caring and talented individual, and George is so deserving of this award!”

George and his wife, Carla, have one daughter Remi. 

Benefactor of the J. William Byrd Staff Excellence is Dr. Thomas R. Morris, a long-time friend and generous supporter of the University of Mount Olive. Dr. Morris is a native of the Nahunta area of Wayne County where he and his family were active members of Union Grove OFWB Church.  With the vision of an education, he worked his way through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation from medical school, he was an optometrist and civic leader in Goldsboro until his retirement.  He now resides in Wilmington.
