UMO to Host Author Travis Mills
MOUNT OLIVE- Travis Mills, author of Tough as They Come, will be a guest at the University of Mount Olive (UMO) on Monday, October 23, at 4 PM in Raper Hall’s Southern Bank Auditorium.
Tough as They Come is the UMO Common Read Selection for Fall 2017. It tells the true story of Travis Mills, a retired United States Army Staff Sergeant. Mills became a leader in the 82nd Airborne Division until April 10, 2012 when he was critically injured by an explosive device during his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. His book tells the story of his strength and courage as he lives out his motto “Never give up. Never Quit” before, during, and after his time in Iraq.
Jackie Hill, Common Read Committee Chair, praised the book by stating that the committee had long searched for a book that they felt totally encompassed all aspects of war. “We have read and discussed several books over the years, but not until this year did we find a book that we thought would capture the imagination of our students, hopefully causing them to re-examine their thoughts on the merits and tragedies of war,” she said.
During this Meet the Author event, UMO students, faculty, and the community will have the opportunity to hear Mills speak about his experiences. For more information, contact Jackie Hill at JHill@umo.edu.
