Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction Overview

The University of Mount Olive offers supplemental instruction for historically challenging courses within the general education requirements. Supplemental instruction is a regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated, organized review session attached to a specific course that provides much needed support for collegiate learners. While classes teach the student “what to learn,” supplemental instruction demonstrates “how to learn” the required material.

Goals of Supplemental Instruction at UMO

  • Improve students’ academic performance in traditionally difficult courses
  • Reduce the attrition rate in these courses
  • Promote critical thinking skills
  • Help students develop transferrable study strategies (thinking & reasoning, responsibility, & reflection) to assist them in the targeted course and in future courses.
