The Department of History and Social Studies teaches students historical facts, historiography, critical thinking, research and writing skills so that they can write history. And why is that important? Because history helps us to understand the past, make sense of the present, and hopefully serve as a guide for the future.

Claude Hunter Moore History Award
A scholarship in memory of Claude Hunter Moore, Professor Emeritus, who taught history at University of Mount Olive from 1969-1981. The award is given to a returning history major selected by the history faculty as showing the most promise in the field.

Dr. Alan K. Lamm, Professor of History, Department Chair

Dr. Lamm is a former U.S. Army Chaplain who specializes in military and religious history. He has published numerous book reviews and journal articles and a book entitled, Five Black Preachers in Army Blue, 1884-1901: The Buffalo Soldier Chaplains.
